UK, August 30 ,2026 - Xabi Alonso made it two Premier League wins from two as Chelsea manager after his side defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 4-3 in a thrilling contest at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
The victory was Alonso's first Premier League home game in charge of Chelsea and continued the Spaniard's perfect start to league life in England. Chelsea had opened their campaign with a 3-2 victory away to Fulham before producing another high-scoring performance against Brighton.
Chelsea started brilliantly and took the lead in the fourth minute when Roméo Lavia reacted quickest to confusion between Brighton's goalkeeper and defence from a corner. It was Lavia's first goal for Chelsea.
The hosts quickly established control in the attacking areas. Pedro Neto then extended Chelsea's advantage after being set up by Morgan Rogers, before João Pedro added a third following excellent work from new signing Jorrel Hato.
Brighton responded before half-time to reduce the deficit, but Chelsea remained dangerous after the break.
The visitors continued to enjoy significant possession, although much of it came in areas where Chelsea's compact defensive structure limited their opportunities. Brighton eventually found a second goal through a deflection, setting up a tense final period.
Alonso reacted with a series of substitutions and was rewarded when Cole Palmer restored Chelsea's two-goal advantage. Palmer had earlier missed a remarkable opportunity from close range but made no mistake with his later chance.

Brighton scored again with virtually the final touch of the match, making the scoreline 4-3 and creating a nervy finish for the home supporters. Chelsea nevertheless held on to secure another important victory.
The result also ended Chelsea's run of four consecutive defeats against Brighton, giving Alonso an important early win against a side that had recently proved difficult for the Blues.
Chelsea's start under Alonso is therefore highly encouraging. They have scored seven goals in their opening two league matches, although conceding five highlights areas that the new manager will still need to address.
