USA, July 29, 2026 - Meta has announced a series of new calling features for WhatsApp aimed at making audio and video calls more convenient across different devices, including support for calls directly from WhatsApp Web.
Meta said on Tuesday that the new features, which include call transfer between devices, a waiting room for group calls, instant HD video, and background noise suppression, will be rolling out gradually to users globally.
One of the most notable updates is that users will have the ability to make and receive one-on-one and group audio or video calls directly through WhatsApp Web, eliminating the need to download the desktop application.
The company says that the feature is designed for people who share computers, work laptops that restrict app installations, or those who simply prefer using a web browser.
Furthermore, users will be able to access features already available on the mobile and desktop apps, including screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab, call history, and favourite contacts from the browser.
Meta has, however, noted that the calls made through WhatsApp Web remain end-to-end encrypted, with no time limits or additional charges.
“Whether you’re on your phone, at your desk, or switching between the two, WhatsApp gives you a private and simple way to make calls. Today, we are bringing new features to make calling even easier, no matter where you are or what device you’re on,” the company stated.
Meta has also introduced call transfer, which will allow users to move an ongoing group call from one device to another without disconnecting.
WhatsApp has also added a waiting room feature, which will give users more control over group conversations. When creating a call link, users can enable a 'Require approval to join' option, allowing participants to wait for the host's approval before entering the call.
On the other hand, the tech giant is also improving video quality through a feature dubbed QuickHD. The feature delivers high-definition video within the first few seconds of a call instead of gradually increasing quality.
In addition, WhatsApp now includes noise suppression technology that reduces background sounds during calls, helping users communicate more clearly in noisy environments. The setting can be enabled or disabled from the in-call settings menu.
