Kenya, 21 April 2026 - The Kenya Meteorological Department (MET) has warned that intensified rain is set to be experienced across several parts of the country from Wednesday, 22 April to Monday, 27 April 2026.
In a heavy rainfall advisory issued on Tuesday, the weatherman said that within the next 24 hours, rainfall is set to exceed 20mm in the coastal region and parts of the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands.
The rainfall is expected to be moderate to heavy, with a moderate probability of occurrence, between 33% and 66%, according to the department.
Among areas that are set to be the most affected include Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, as well as parts of Wajir, Mandera, Taita-Taveta, Kitui, and Makueni counties.
The rainfall is set to be accompanied by heavy winds, with ocean waves expected to rise above two metres along the Coast, thus posing a risk to maritime activities.
“Rainfall is expected to continue across several parts of the country. From 22nd April to 27th April 2026, the rainfall is likely to intensify, with accumulations exceeding 20mm in 24 hours over the Coast, as well as parts of the Northeastern and Southeastern Lowlands,” the weatherman said.
“The upcoming rainfall may be accompanied by gusty winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s). Additionally, sea waves are expected to reach heights of more than 2 meters along the Coast, “ he added.
Residents of these areas should brace for potential floods, flash floods, and poor visibility during the forecasted period.
The department has said that floodwaters are likely to occur in downstream areas where rainfall is not heavy.
Residents have been encouraged to remain vigilant and to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields, not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows, and also minimise exposure to lightning strikes, and to take precautions while engaging in maritime activities.
