Kenya, 17 May 2026 - Manchester United ended their final home game of the season with a thrilling 3–2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, in a match that combined drama, controversy, emotional farewells, and Premier League history.
The victory not only strengthened United’s impressive late-season resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick, but also saw club captain Bruno Fernandes equal the Premier League single-season assist record with his 20th assist of the campaign.
Fernandes now joins Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne as the only players in Premier League history to record 20 assists in a single season.
The match itself delivered plenty of entertainment from the opening whistle.
United took the lead after just six minutes when defender Luke Shaw scored his first Premier League goal in several years. The move began with sustained pressure from the hosts before Shaw found space inside the box and finished confidently to give Old Trafford an early lift.
Despite United’s bright start, Forest remained dangerous throughout the first half. Morgan Gibbs-White caused problems repeatedly in transition, while Elliot Anderson’s creativity helped Forest stay competitive in midfield. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was also forced into important saves as the visitors searched for a response.
The equaliser finally arrived shortly after halftime.
In the 54th minute, defender Morato headed home from a well-delivered cross to make it 1–1, silencing Old Trafford momentarily and giving Forest renewed belief.
However, the game quickly swung back in United’s favour in controversial fashion.
Just two minutes later, Matheus Cunha restored United’s lead after a chaotic attacking sequence involving Bryan Mbeumo. Forest players protested furiously after replays appeared to show the ball striking Mbeumo’s arm during the buildup, but following a VAR review, the goal was allowed to stand. The decision immediately sparked debate among pundits and supporters online.
Forest continued to push forward, but United gradually regained control through Fernandes, whose influence on the game grew stronger as spaces opened up.
The defining moment arrived in the 76th minute.
Fernandes delivered a precise cross into the penalty area for Bryan Mbeumo, who finished confidently to make it 3–1. The assist officially moved Fernandes onto 20 assists for the season, equalling the all-time Premier League record previously held jointly by Henry and De Bruyne.

Old Trafford erupted in celebration as teammates surrounded the Portuguese midfielder, fully aware of the historic significance of the moment.
Social media reactions poured in immediately after the goal, with many Manchester United supporters describing Fernandes as one of the club’s greatest post-Sir Alex Ferguson players. Several fans on Reddit also pointed out that the midfielder could easily have broken the record already had more chances been converted earlier in the season.
Nottingham Forest refused to surrender, though.
In the 79th minute, Morgan Gibbs-White produced a brilliant improvised finish to reduce the deficit to 3–2 and set up a tense ending. Forest pushed aggressively in the final minutes, while United missed chances to extend their lead through Diogo Dalot and substitute Joshua Zirkzee.
The closing stages also carried emotional significance for the home supporters.
Veteran midfielder Casemiro received a standing ovation when substituted late in the match in what many reports described as his final appearance at Old Trafford before an expected summer departure.
Under Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s turnaround has been remarkable.
Since taking interim charge earlier in the season, Carrick has guided the club into the Premier League top three while also securing UEFA Champions League qualification. Reports from several English outlets suggest the club are now close to confirming him as permanent manager after a dramatic improvement in performances and results.
For Nottingham Forest, the defeat was disappointing but not disastrous. Their Premier League safety had already been secured before kickoff, allowing them to approach the match with relative freedom despite falling short in the end.
But the day ultimately belonged to Bruno Fernandes.
In a match filled with goals, controversy, and pressure, the Manchester United captain once again proved decisive.
Twenty assists, a place alongside Premier League legends.
And with one game still remaining, the chance to break the record outright.
