Kenya, April 24, 2026 - Police officers engaged armed bandits in a gun battle in Laikipia County, repelling the attackers and recovering stolen cattle in an operation authorities say is part of a sustained push against banditry.
In a statement posted on its X account on Friday, the National Police Service (NPS) said its security teams had “continued to sustain operational momentum in the ongoing fight against banditry and the recovery of stolen livestock,” following a tracking mission that began on Thursday and stretched into early Friday.
According to the statement, officers traced the stolen animals to Loldaiga Ranch, where they encountered armed raiders.
“Upon noticing the approaching security team, [the bandits] opened fire in an attempt to retain control of the livestock,” NPS said.
The officers, however, responded and overpowered the attackers.
“The officers overpowered them,” the statement noted, adding that the confrontation ended with the “safe retrieval of seven more head of cattle.”
Authorities described the recovery as a significant gain in the broader operation, which remains active.

NPS emphasised that the mission reflects a “continuous and determined effort not only to recover stolen property but also to bring those responsible to justice.”
The incident highlights the persistent threat posed by banditry in Laikipia even as security agencies ramp up operations to contain the vice, amid growing calls for lasting solutions to recurring livestock raids.
Security teams remain on the ground pursuing the attackers, with officials signalling that the crackdown will continue until those behind the raids are apprehended.
