Kenya, June 15, 2026 - The Ministry of Interior has revealed plans to install CCTV cameras in six major cities and towns across the country as part of a broader effort to reduce crime using technology.
Speaking on Sunday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said that the government is in the process of procuring the devices, which will be installed in Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kisumu, and Eldoret.
According to Murkomen, this initiative will be particularly key to weeding out petty thieves and juvenile gangs that have been on the rise in recent years.
"We are in the process of revamping our security sector by infusing technology, and one of the things we are doing is to procure CCTV cameras to ensure that Nairobi and other towns and cities are fitted with surveillance to broaden coverage," Murkomen said.
"We will also ensure that we have more command centres to ensure that we monitor every action that is taking place. We know that Nairobi in the recent past has faced petty crimes, especially in the CBD, and this revamping of the security sector will ensure that we capture these people," he added.
Murkomen has further assured that the national government will collaborate with the Nairobi County Government to benchmark and learn from other countries, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, on how to revamp the security of the country's capital.
The CS has assured that the government remains keen to commence the process of forming a new police unit, the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, in line with President William Ruto's directive.

"That police unit will be supported with more equipment, vehicles, and better training to ensure that they deal with the unique challenges that Nairobi faces as a metropolitan area," Murkomen said.
The announcement comes at a time of growing security concerns in the city, amid a rise in criminal gangs that have been terrorising residents across Nairobi.
Most recently, CCTV footage captured dozens of suspected gang members storming the All Saints Cathedral, disrupting meetings and robbing individuals on the premises.
According to the National Police Service, two suspects have already been arrested, with investigations still ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved.
"The National Police Service appeals to anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward and report it to the nearest police station, or via emergency numbers 999 or 911, the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000. All information will be treated in the utmost confidence," the NPS stated.
