MOGADISHU, 6 November 2026 — Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire called on Thursday for a united approach to the international community to keep troops in the country and secure funding for the Somali National Army.
"Together, let us engage the international community so that the troops stay with us, and together let us seek funding to sustain the Somali National Army," Khaire said at a press conference held by the opposition Somali Salvation Forum.
He said the security situation required a united position and called for a political agreement to be reached quickly.
"The rest of us need to join hands, seek God's help and work to save this country," he said.
Khaire accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's government of having "thrown the country into a pit" over the past four years, saying Somalis must stand up to prevent the country from being buried in it.
The appeal comes as the government and the opposition remain at odds over constitutional amendments, the terms of office of state institutions and the format of elections.
