Kenya, 25 May 2026 - Former Chief Justice David Maraga has slammed the government for ignoring court orders and vowed to uphold rule of law if elected as next President.
Speaking in Turkana during the launch of Ukombozi Campaign, the CJ Emeritus said the current administration does not respect the Constitution noting that they treat court orders like any other paper.
He said the government has been ignoring court orders specifically from people seeking compensation after being shot and injured by state agencies such as the police.
“If government is taken to court by someone who is aggrieved or has been shot by police and the court orders that he should be paid, the current administration just ignores that,” he said.
He said if elected, he will be the first person to ensure the Kenyan Constitution is given the maximum respect it deserves.
The former CJ said there are hundreds of cases in courts that show the Kenyan government has not implemented as required by the Constitution.
He said there are people who have been “untouchable” after they broke the law or even commit heinous crimes like murder, this he said will be things of the past if he is elected at the helm.
“If I am elected there will be no things like 'big person’. If the President implements the law and the constitution who else cannot?” he posed.

The former CJ cited the 2024 protests that resulted in the abduction and extra judicial execution of young people, noting that with the current constitution, such a thing is not supposed to occur as it protects the lives of Kenyans.
Maraga, who is widely known for his 2017 Supreme Court decision that annulled Kenya’s presidential election results, has been campaigning and popularising his United Green Movement (UGM).
He has declared his intention to run for president in Kenya’s 2027 General Election under the UGM ticket.
He has been going round the country in a grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 general Election, he is running on the anti-corruption movement.
His strategy, the former Chief Justice said, is a citizen-funded campaign, where he asked ordinary Kenyans to donate money toward his 2027 presidential bid instead of relying on wealthy political financiers.
So far he has toured counties such as Embu, Busia, and Kisumu, Garissa, Wajir and Tana River to mobilize supporters and encourage voter registration ahead of 2027.
