Kenya, May 02, 2026 - A total of 10 people have lost their lives this week following devastating floods that have hit several parts of the country.
In a statement on Friday, the National Police Service (NPS) said the highest number of fatalities, even, has been recorded in the Eastern Region this week.
Safety concerns have also been raised in Elgeyo Marakwet after a landslide occurred in Tambach Sub-County.
Furthermore, the NPS said the heavy downpour has caused severe infrastructural damage, with two bridges, the Mwena Bridge in Kwale County and the Ngomeni Bridge in Kitui County, affected, disrupting transport and access in some areas.
The service has assured the public that the government has deployed emergency response teams to spearhead rescue operations and help restore access and critical services.
“The Service, in coordination with relevant agencies, remains fully committed to safeguarding lives and providing support where needed,” NPS stated.
“We urge all persons, especially those in high-risk and affected areas, to remain vigilant, avoid flooded zones, heed advisories from local authorities, and stay informed as the Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor and provide timely updates,” it added.

Kenyans have been encouraged to contact emergency service providers and security agencies through 999 or 911, or report incidents anonymously via #FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 (toll-free) or WhatsApp 0709 570 000 in case of emergencies.
The update comes two days after the government urged residents living in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground, especially those residing near key dams along the Tana River.
Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura cautioned that Masinga Dam had reached full capacity, increasing the risk of downstream flooding, particularly in Garissa and Tana River counties.
Mwaura added that the government is undertaking controlled water releases to prevent structural damage. Kamburu, Gitaru, Kindaruma, and Kiambere dams are also being closely regulated to maintain safe operational levels.
The government has deployed disaster response teams, including the Kenya Defence Forces, to spearhead rescue operations in flood-affected areas, including Nairobi.
