MOGADISHU, 16 September 2026 Somali women stood out among the highest-achieving graduates at the 20th graduation ceremony of the University of Somalia (UNISO), with female students securing first place in six of the university’s eight faculties.
The graduation ceremony, held on Wednesday at the National Theatre in Mogadishu, celebrated 1,684 students who completed undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the university.
Of the graduates, 827 were women, representing 49.1 percent of the graduating class, while 857 were men, accounting for 50.9 percent.
Although the difference between the number of male and female graduates was relatively small, the graduation results showed a notable presence of women among the top-performing students across the faculties.
Female students secured first place in six of UNISO’s eight faculties, making women’s academic performance one of the notable features of this year’s graduation ceremony.

The achievement extended beyond the faculty-level rankings. A female student also emerged as the overall top-performing graduate of UNISO’s 20th graduating class.
The achievement comes after another female student was named the overall top graduate of the university’s 19th graduating class, which graduated in 2025.
The results from the two graduating classes highlight the continued presence of Somali women among the highest achievers in higher education.
The graduates left the ceremony with degrees and academic achievements earned through years of study and dedication. Some students completed their education with the support of scholarships and other forms of educational assistance.
