Ethiopia, 24 April 2026 Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State discussed climate threats and action plans at a Jigjiga meeting Thursday, regional broadcaster SRTV reported.
The meeting, organised by the Environment Protection and Rural Land Administration Bureau, brought together regional officials, government institutions, non-governmental organisations and representatives from Jigjiga University.
Officials said the discussions focused on the impact of climate change in the region over recent years and strategies to address future challenges.
Regional authorities highlighted policies aimed at reducing the effects of climate change, including efforts to cut reliance on fossil fuel-powered transport and irrigation systems, and a shift towards electric vehicles and solar-powered farming solutions.

Participants also discussed strengthening programmes such as Ethiopia’s Green Legacy initiative and tackling deforestation.
Senior officials, including Head of the Regional President’s Office Hussein Hashi and Environment Bureau Minister Mohiyadin Abdi Hussein, said coordinated action was needed to address climate-related risks.
The Horn of Africa has faced repeated climate shocks in recent years, with multiple consecutive seasons of below-average rainfall contributing to drought conditions across parts of Ethiopia, according to regional climate assessments.
The meeting concluded with a call for closer cooperation among stakeholders to mitigate the impact of climate change in the region.
