ADDIS ABABA, 7 November 2026 Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday urged political parties to look beyond electoral competition and agree on long-term national priorities.
“This requires parties to look beyond electoral competition, build consensus on long-term national priorities that transcend changes in government, and work together in the national interest,” Abiy wrote on X at the second African Political Parties Summit in Addis Ababa.
The summit, held under the theme “Governing for Growth,” is hosted by the Prosperity Party. Its first edition took place in Accra, Ghana, in August 2025.
Abiy said the ruling party and opposition parties needed to reach a broad agreement on the country’s long-term goals, the Somali Region’s state broadcaster SRTV reported.
He said citizens had the right to support the party and political views of their choice, but parties that win elections and form a government must deliver effective work in the national interest, according to SRTV.

Abiy said unity, accountability and inclusive governance were essential to ensuring that political leadership improves people’s lives.
His remarks come five months after Ethiopia’s June 1 general election, in which his Prosperity Party won 438 of the 501 seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives, with turnout of 94%, the Associated Press reported.
Most of the ruling party’s opponents were prevented from taking part in the vote, and its most prominent critics were imprisoned, in exile or had disappeared, according to the AP.
The Tigray region was again excluded from the election, while 143 polling stations in the Oromia and Amhara regions failed to open because of fighting, the election board said.
