MOGADISHU, November 6 2026 – Somalia’s SIMAD University on Friday night announced academic ranks for 35 of its faculty members, saying it had become the first university in Somalia to award ranks based on an assessment by experts from East Africa.
The ranks comprised 12 professors, nine associate professors and 14 assistant professors, the university said in a press release.
The assessment was carried out by independent experts from universities in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania that are members of the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), the university said.
The experts based their evaluation on East African public university standards and the draft standards of Somalia’s National Commission for Higher Education (NCHE), it added.

SIMAD Rector Abdikarim Mohaidin Ahmed thanked the experts. “We thank our brothers who came to us from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, who travelled from their countries to take part in the assessment of SIMAD University’s lecturers so that ranks could be awarded,” he said.
The announcement was made at a ceremony in Mogadishu marking the university’s 27th anniversary, attended by NCHE Chairman Mahmoud Ahmed Jimale and Somali Universities Association Chairman Hassan Mohamed Sayid.
Academic ranks are an international system universities use to assess faculty, based on teaching, research and publications. SIMAD said the move would bring its faculty in line with regional and international higher education standards.
SIMAD, founded in 1999, runs facilities including Dr. Sumait Hospital, the SIMAD Institute for Global Health (SIGHt), the SIMAD iLab innovation centre and the Institute of Climate and Environment (ICE Institute).
