Ethiopia, June 11, 2026 - Ethiopia is expected to announce the final results of its 7th General Election today, bringing to a close one of the largest electoral exercises on the African continent and a vote that could further consolidate Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's political dominance.
The National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) had scheduled June 11 for the official declaration of final results following nationwide voting on June 1 and a week-long counting and verification process.
More than 54 million registered voters were eligible to participate in the election, which saw citizens elect members of the federal parliament and regional councils across much of the country.
However, voting did not take place in the entire Tigray region and parts of Amhara and Oromia due to ongoing security challenges.
The election is widely expected to deliver a decisive victory for Abiy Ahmed's ruling Prosperity Party, which already dominates parliament following its overwhelming win in the 2021 elections.
According to reports, the party was projected to secure another landslide victory amid a fragmented opposition and continuing instability in several regions.
Early indicators from the vote-counting process have strengthened those expectations. According to NEBE, results had already been declared in hundreds of constituencies within days of the election, with the majority of constituencies completing their tallying processes ahead of the final national announcement.

The election has attracted significant international attention, with observer missions from the African Union and Intergovernmental Authority on Development describing the process as generally peaceful while acknowledging security-related disruptions that prevented voting in some constituencies.
The African Union Election Observation Mission, headed by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, noted that voting was conducted across most parts of the country and said final results were expected on June 11. The mission also recognized ongoing challenges in parts of Tigray, Amhara and Oromia.
Beyond determining the composition of Ethiopia's next parliament, the results are expected to shape the country's political trajectory at a time when the government is pursuing ambitious economic reforms while simultaneously confronting security challenges and regional tensions.
A strong showing by the Prosperity Party would likely reinforce Abiy Ahmed's reform agenda and strengthen his government's mandate for another parliamentary term.
However, analysts note that the incoming administration will continue facing difficult questions surrounding national reconciliation, post-conflict recovery, economic transformation and security in several regions.
As Ethiopians await the final declaration from NEBE, attention is now focused on whether the results will confirm the widespread expectation of another commanding victory for the ruling party and what that outcome will mean for the future direction of Africa's second-most populous nation.
