Djibouti, 13 September 2026 Djibouti's U20 national football team departed for Tanzania on Saturday to compete in the CECAFA U20 Championship, with the young side hoping to turn its regional campaign into a pathway to the continental stage.
The tournament is scheduled to run from September 15 to 25, 2026.
The players were given a send-off at the football academy, attended by the president of the Djibouti Football Federation and other senior football and sports officials, including federation director Hassan Ali and U20 delegation head Said Bouha.
Federation officials urged the players to represent Djibouti with distinction and compete with determination when they take to the pitch.
But the trip to Tanzania is about more than competing for the CECAFA title.
The tournament offers Djibouti a route to qualification for the 2026 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, raising the stakes of every match.
Djibouti has been drawn in Group B alongside Uganda and Sudan.

All three teams will play their group matches at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam. With only three teams in the group, there will be little room to recover from mistakes in the opening fixtures.
Djibouti will face two teams with considerable experience in regional competitions, increasing the pressure on the side to secure results from its first match.

Under the tournament format, the two finalists will represent the East and Central African region at the 2026 U20 AFCON, meaning a place in the final would bring two rewards, a shot at the CECAFA title and a ticket to the continental championship.
The Djibouti Football Federation has expressed confidence in the new generation of players, viewing the squad as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country's football development.
When the tournament kicks off on September 15, Djibouti's two group-stage matches could determine whether its journey ends in Dar es Salaam or continues onto the continental stage.
