TUNIS, May 24 May 2026 – Djibouti’s University Hospital Centre (CHU) has signed four medical cooperation agreements with leading Tunisian hospitals to expand the country’s emergency care capacity, according to the Djibouti News Agency (ADI).
The agreements were formalized during a mission in Tunis and Sfax May 12-15, led by the CHU Director General, Dr. Omar Mahamoud Ismael.
The agreements involve Hédi Chaker University Hospital Center in Sfax and CHU La Rabta, two of Tunisia’s main public hospital institutions.
Officials discussed collaboration strategies to strengthen Djibouti’s healthcare system and transfer medical expertise between the two countries.

The delegation was received by the Tunisian Minister of Health, Dr. Mustapha Ferjani. Working sessions brought together hospital officials, medical specialists, and partner representatives to address Djibouti’s growing need for specialized care.
Djibouti, with an estimated population of about 1.15 million people, has a relatively low physician density of roughly 2.11 doctors per 10,000 residents, according to data from the World Health Organization.
“These partnerships are expected to gradually enhance the autonomy of Djibouti’s national health structures, particularly in managing kidney and cardiovascular diseases,” the CHU said.
The agreements form part of Djibouti’s collaboration with Tunisian hospitals to strengthen healthcare services.
