Djibouti has expanded its livestock export capacity with the launch of a new carrier vessel aimed at supporting growing regional trade, officials said.
The vessel, named Tuwiq 3, was launched on April 30 by Abu Yaser International Shipping at the port of Djibouti, authorities said.
Officials attending the launch included Transport Minister Hassan Houmed Ibrahim, Agriculture and Livestock Minister Mohamed Ahmed Awaleh, and Djibouti Ports Authority Director Mohamed Moussa Abbar.
The vessel is designed to transport live animals and is expected to play a key role in boosting exports, particularly to Saudi Arabia during the annual Hajj season.
Authorities said the ship can carry between 50,000 and 60,000 sheep, as well as up to 5,000 cattle and camels, making it one of the largest livestock carriers operating in the Horn of Africa.

Awaleh said the vessel would strengthen Djibouti’s export services and support economic growth linked to the livestock sector.
The development underscores Djibouti’s efforts to expand its role as a regional logistics and export hub, particularly in the livestock trade, a key source of income across the Horn of Africa.
