United States, 4 July 2026 - Colombia secured their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ghana in Kansas City, as an early strike from Jhon Arias proved enough to send Néstor Lorenzo's side through to the next stage.
Arias' 14th-minute goal settled a physical and closely contested Round of 32 encounter in which Colombia dominated possession and created the better chances, while Ghana struggled to seriously test goalkeeper Camilo Vargas despite a spirited defensive display. The victory sets up a Round of 16 clash against Switzerland, who progressed after defeating Algeria.
Early Injury Disrupts Colombia's Plans#
The match got off to an unfortunate start for Colombia when striker Jhon Córdoba suffered an injury just eight minutes into the contest.
Head coach Néstor Lorenzo turned to veteran forward Luis Suárez, whose introduction would have an immediate impact on the game. Ghana were also forced into an early change when defender Mohammed Senaya was unable to continue and was replaced by Alidu Seidu.
Colombia capitalized almost immediately after the substitutions.
In the 14th minute, Luis Suárez burst down the right flank and delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area. Jhon Arias timed his run perfectly, arriving unmarked to guide a first-time finish beyond goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and give Colombia a deserved 1-0 lead.
It was Arias' first goal of the knockout stage and capped an excellent opening spell from Colombia, who controlled the tempo through James Rodríguez, Jefferson Lerma and Gustavo Puerta.
The South Americans dictated possession for much of the first half, forcing Ghana to spend long periods defending deep.
Luis Díaz repeatedly threatened down the left wing, while James Rodríguez orchestrated attacks from midfield. Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi was called into action several times, producing important saves to keep the Black Stars within one goal of their opponents.
By halftime, Colombia had enjoyed a significant advantage in possession and chances created, but their inability to find a second goal kept Ghana in the contest.
Ghana Unable to Find a Response#
Carlos Queiroz's side improved after the interval and attempted to increase the tempo, but Colombia's well-organized defence remained difficult to break down.
