Ethiopia, 8 April, 2026 The African Union has welcomed a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a significant step toward de-escalation and urging continued dialogue to secure lasting peace.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the agreement reflected “commendable leadership and a shared commitment to de-escalation,” following an announcement by Pakistan’s prime minister of an immediate truce involving the two countries and their allies.
The statement said the development aligns with the African Union’s consistent calls for restraint and the peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomacy.
It also commended mediation efforts by Oman, Türkiye and Egypt, noting that their diplomatic engagement helped facilitate the agreement.

The AU highlighted the broader global impact of the conflict, saying disruptions to fuel supplies had contributed to rising inflation and increased costs of basic goods across Africa.
“This ceasefire presents a critical opportunity to ease the suffering of populations affected both directly and indirectly,” Youssouf said, adding that sustained dialogue and inclusive diplomacy would be essential to consolidate progress.
The AU chief expressed support for ongoing talks in Islamabad and urged all parties to maintain momentum toward a comprehensive and durable peace, emphasizing that diplomacy remains the only viable path to resolving international crises in line with the United Nations Charter.
