Kenya, April 8, 2026 - Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hinted at a possible political thaw with President William Ruto, saying he is open to working together, though not without reservations.
Speaking during a burial in Nyandarua County, Gachagua struck a measured tone, urging his supporters to show respect to the President and avoid disruptive political chants.
“I do not want to hear ‘one-term’ slogans… we are here for a burial, and the President has come in good faith,” he said.
While extending an olive branch, Gachagua made it clear that any working relationship would depend on changes within the President’s inner circle, which he accused of influencing decisions negatively.
“We can work with you, but the people you walk with are the problem,” he added.
His remarks suggest a shift from earlier hardline criticism, even as tensions between the two leaders have played out publicly in recent months.
More from Kenya
At the same time, Gachagua raised concerns about rising political tensions in the Mt Kenya region, accusing some leaders of fuelling hostility and attempting to disrupt his political activities.
He also called on the President to address pressing issues affecting the region, including drug abuse, saying more needs to be done to tackle the problem.
Despite the criticism, his message centred on the need for respect and restraint, signalling that while differences remain, the door to engagement has not been completely closed.
