May 27, 2026 - As part of the national policy to rotate key celebrations across regions and promote inclusive development, Wajir Town’s hosting of this year’s Madaraka Day marks a historic first for the North Eastern region.
In preparation for the event, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) are upgrading critical road networks to bitumen standards.
The intervention is expected to support the successful hosting of the celebrations while unlocking long-term gains in trade, connectivity, and urban growth.
The upgraded corridors are being designed to support a vibrant 24-hour economy through the integration of modern urban infrastructure such as solar street lighting and clearly marked pedestrian crossings to improve mobility, safety, and accessibility within the town.

- Clearly marked pedestrian crossings to improve road safety and reduce traffic-related accidents.
- Improved accessibility and mobility for residents, visitors, and persons with disabilities.
The infrastructure improvements are also expected to support local businesses and improve the overall quality of life for residents by creating a more connected and inclusive urban environment.
The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is also playing a key role in ensuring that the urban improvements are grounded in safety and coordinated operations, supporting both the Madaraka Day event and Wajir Town’s continued transformation.
