August 25, 2026 - Strong winds have damaged Baraki Dispensary in Lagdera, Garissa County, disrupting healthcare services, including maternal deliveries.
Baraki Ward MCA Hassan Geley said the winds blew off sections of the health facility's roof on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the dispensary unable to provide primary healthcare services.
“No fatalities were reported, but the damage has completely paralysed all primary healthcare services at the facility, including maternal deliveries,” Mr Geley said.
The MCA said he had contacted the relevant county health department, which had responded positively and pledged to undertake emergency repairs and maintenance to restore services at the facility.
The incident comes amid strong winds being experienced in the Lagdera region during the Hagaa season, which is characterised by dry, dust-laden winds sweeping across the area bordering the Waso plains.
Mohamed Hassan a resident,said the strong winds posed challenges to residents, particularly school-going children and motorists.
“During the Hagaa season, strong dust-laden winds blow across the Lagdera region bordering the Waso plains. Children are sometimes locked out of school due to the extreme winds, while drivers at times lose visibility,” he said.
The MCA also welcomed the county government's response, saying urgent repairs would enable the dispensary to resume normal operations and restore essential healthcare services to residents.
The damage has raised concerns over the vulnerability of public facilities in the region to extreme weather conditions, particularly during the windy and dry season.
