July 17, 2026 - Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and his Deputy convened a meeting with chiefs from all 30 wards across the county's six constituencies to strengthen efforts aimed at increasing the issuance of national identity cards, mobilising eligible residents to register as voters, facilitating the collection of uncollected IDs, and improving coordination to make these services more accessible.
The governor's engagement with chiefs from every ward signals a coordinated strategy to tackle the challenges in ID issuance and boost voter registration. By working closely with local leaders, the government can better identify areas with low registration rates and address barriers residents face in accessing these services.
This collaboration can also foster trust within the community, as chiefs often play a vital role in influencing and mobilising local populations. Additionally, the emphasis on collecting uncollected IDs points to a proactive approach in ensuring that all eligible residents are recognised and can participate fully in civic activities. Such initiatives are crucial for promoting democratic engagement and ensuring that everyone has a voice in the electoral process.
The meeting brought together Wajir Senator Hon. Abass Sheikh Mohamed, Deputy Governor Hon. Ahmed Muhumed, the County Commissioner, Assistant County Commissioners, representatives of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), and the Office of the Registrar of Persons.
"The county government will support this exercise by providing logistical assistance to registration officers serving remote and hard-to-reach areas so that no eligible resident is left behind," the governor said.
