Fletcher added that the situation has been exacerbated by food insecurity, widespread malnutrition, and limited access to basic services.
The UN highlighted that critical food insecurity has been observed in Bay and Bakool regions of the South West State, and over 500,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of 2026.
Somalia is grappling with severe drought following failed or below-average rains, with the crisis further compounded by conflict, displacement, disease outbreaks, and rising commodity prices, the UN said.
