Kenya, May 07, 2026 - Nairobi is set to take centre stage in global diplomacy next week as United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visits Kenya for the launch of a multi-billion-shilling expansion of the UN headquarters in Gigiri.
Guterres is expected in the country on May 11, where he will join President William Ruto at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) for the groundbreaking and inauguration of the new development project.
The expansion, valued at about USD 340 million (Sh44.2 billion), is aimed at strengthening Nairobi’s position as a leading global hub for international diplomacy and development.
The UN says the project will include new climate-resilient office buildings worth USD 66.2 million (Sh8.6 billion) and upgraded conference facilities valued at USD 265.7 million (Sh34.5 billion).
Once complete, the upgrades will significantly increase Nairobi’s capacity to host international meetings, with conference rooms rising from 14 to 30 and delegate capacity growing from 2,000 to 9,000 people.
The development is expected to place Nairobi among the world’s top UN centres alongside New York and Geneva, while overtaking Vienna in conference capacity.
“This investment reflects a deliberate shift to strengthen Nairobi as a global centre for multilateral engagement and sustainable development,” the UN said.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has also invested an additional USD 11.2 million (Sh1.6 billion) in office infrastructure within the complex.
Beyond the construction project, Guterres is expected to use his Nairobi visit to push for stronger African representation in global decision-making, including renewed calls for reform of the UN Security Council.
The UN chief is also expected to address several ongoing crises affecting the continent, including conflicts in Sudan, South Sudan, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the Sahel region.
Food insecurity, debt pressure facing African economies and the impact of Middle East tensions on the continent are also expected to feature in his remarks.
Following the ceremony in Gigiri, Guterres and President Ruto are expected to address the media.
The visit is likely to further elevate Kenya’s diplomatic standing, with Nairobi continuing to grow as a major centre for international cooperation, humanitarian work and environmental governance.
