Japan Commits to AI Partnership with KPA to Modernise Kenya Ports Operations

Kenya, 5 August 2026 - Japan has announced plans to partner with the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to improve port efficiency.

The proposal was made on Wednesday during a meeting between KPA General Manager Cargo Operations Sudi Mwasinago and a delegation from the Embassy of Japan, accompanied by representatives from Sakana AI,  which isone of Japan's leading artificial intelligence firms.

KPA said that the proposed collaboration would focus on leveraging advanced AI technologies to improve operational efficiency, optimise port processes and strengthen data-driven decision-making across the Authority's operations.

Officials said the partnership would play a fundamental role in accelerating the Authority's broader modernisation agenda and position Kenyan ports to meet growing regional and international trade demands.

The move comes as KPA continues to invest in digital technologies aimed at enhancing cargo handling, streamlining logistics and improving service delivery at Kenyan ports, especially through collaboration with international partners.

 Just a week ago, South Korea maintained that it will continue to support the authority's port modernisation programme through technology transfer, infrastructure development and capacity building.

The commitments were made last week during a meeting between the Republic of Korea's Ambassador to Kenya, Kang Hyung-shik, and KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto, where the two discussed expanding collaboration in the maritime sector.

South Korea specifically noted that it will support the authority by sharing advanced port technologies, digital solutions, and best practices in maritime operations.

Ruto maintained that the authority will continue to strengthen collaboration with leading Korean ports to accelerate digitalisation, improve service delivery, and enhance the competitiveness of the Port of Mombasa as the preferred gateway to East and Central Africa.

“Captain Ruto welcomed the continued partnership, saying KPA has benefited from strong relationships with Korean shipping lines, logistics firms and maritime stakeholders that have facilitated growth in international trade through the Port of Mombasa,” the authority stated.
