MOGADISHU, 3 November 2026 — Somalia's Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education has set the minimum annual learning hours for schools nationwide, saying the measure is in line with the national curriculum.
Primary and middle school students are required to complete at least 1,008 hours per year, while secondary students must complete 1,134 hours annually, according to the ministry.
Director General of Basic Education Dr Abdullahi Abdi Omar said the hours are outlined in the national curriculum for different education levels.
"The required learning hours for primary and middle schools are 1,008 hours per year, while secondary school students are required to complete 1,134 hours annually," he said.
The ministry also announced that registration for students in Grades 1 to 4 will close on 30 November, and will not reopen until the next academic year. Registration will be closed from 1 December.
It urged teachers across the country to register, stressing the importance of maintaining comprehensive records of students and teachers.
The measures are part of efforts to regulate the education system and ensure schools meet learning-hour requirements set out in the national curriculum.
