Mogadishu, 3 November 2026 – First Somali Takaful Insurance has won the Company of the Year – SME award at the East African Community (EAC) Regional Quality Awards 2026, held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The company’s Chairman and Founder, Mohamed Abdi Mohamed, received the award on behalf of the company at a ceremony attended by companies and institutions from across East African Community member states.
The EAC Regional Quality Awards are designed to promote quality across the region by encouraging companies to adopt quality standards and management practices. Companies are assessed against the quality management principles of the international ISO 9001 standard, which include customer focus, leadership, engagement of people and continuous improvement.
This year, the awards were made up of four categories, with separate awards for large enterprises and small and medium-sized enterprises. First Somali Takaful won the Company of the Year category for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The company said the award is an important milestone and a recognition of its commitment to quality, excellence and delivering trusted Takaful solutions. It added that the achievement reflects its continued efforts to raise service standards, strengthen its presence in the regional market and contribute to the growth of the insurance sector in East Africa.
“We have shown that insurance can work in Somalia, that it can be high-quality and trustworthy, giving back to society and sharing in people’s losses. When we started, it was difficult to convince people about insurance. Today, a large part of society recognises that insurance protects their property and their future,” said Chairman Mohamed Abdi Mohamed.
First Somali Takaful officially launched in December 2014 and was the first company to bring back modern insurance services to Somalia. The company operates under the Takaful model, a form of Islamic insurance, and provides motor, travel, marine and cargo, engineering, health and agricultural insurance.
In January 2026, First Somali Takaful became one of the first four companies to receive an Islamic insurance licence from the Central Bank of Somalia.
