Kenya, May 25, 2026 - The National Treasury has announced the disbursement of Sh2.7 billion under the Kenya Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (K-WASH) programme to support water and sanitation projects across 19 counties.
In a gazette notice dated May 22, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi said the allocations, financed through a German Development Bank (KfW) loan, will be utilized during the 2025/2026 financial year.
Kitui County received the largest allocation at Sh248 million, followed by Bomet with Sh148 million. Makueni and Kirinyaga were each allocated Sh144 million.
Other beneficiary counties include Baringo, Garissa, Kericho, Kwale, Mandera, Migori, Murang’a, Nandi, Narok, Samburu, Tana River, Tharaka-Nithi, Vihiga, and West Pokot.
“It is notified for the general information of the public that pursuant to section 6 (2) (u) of the County Governments Additional Allocations (No. 2) Act, 2025, the conditional allocations financed by proceeds from KfW (German Development Bank) K-WASH Programmes have been allocated to county governments for the Financial Year 2025/2026,” the notice stated.
More from Kenya
Despite more than 90 per cent of Kenya’s population having access to improved water sources, access remains significantly lower in rural areas, where only about 63 per cent of residents can access improved water services and just 19 per cent have access to piped water supply.
Many rural and ASAL counties also continue to face growing climate-related challenges. Flooding frequently disrupts wastewater treatment systems, damages sanitation infrastructure, and contaminates water sources, while prolonged droughts continue worsening water scarcity across affected regions.
The K-WASH programme focuses on improving access to clean water and sanitation services in rural areas while also supporting efficiency reforms within the country’s water sector.
The initiative is expected to benefit more than four million people across the targeted counties through investments in last-mile connectivity, elimination of open defecation, and strengthening of water service providers.
