Ethiopia, 16 December 2025 – The Selsay Weyane Tigray Party has warned of the risk of Tigray slipping into internal conflict, accusing breakaway groups within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of pushing the region toward further instability.
In a statement, the party said Tigray is going through a critical phase marked by deepening political divisions and growing security concerns, noting that “drums of civil war” are being beaten by splinter factions within the TPLF.
The statement accused those factions of pursuing policies that serve the interests of Addis Ababa and Asmara at the expense of Tigray’s unity and internal stability. It argued that the failure to launch an inclusive and genuine political dialogue has exacerbated internal rifts and weakened both national cohesion and security in the region.
The party also accused the TPLF of continuing what it called the “illegal control” of media outlets and democratic institutions in Tigray, stressing that years of political turmoil have plunged the region into a comprehensive crisis with social, psychological, political, security, and economic dimensions.

As a way out of the crisis, the party called for convening an inclusive regional conference in Tigray, saying such a step could mark the beginning of addressing internal divisions and preventing further escalation. “Discussion and dialogue can be the first layer of recovery and healing for Tigray,” the statement said.
The TPLF leadership has remained divided since the end of the Tigray war. One faction, led by the former head of Tigray’s interim administration, Getachew Reda, broke away and later founded the Semret Party, with several of its leaders taking up positions within the federal government.
Meanwhile, the other faction, led by TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael, continues to operate under the TPLF banner, retaining broad influence across several parts of the Tigray region.
