14 May 2026 - Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has warned leaders in Marsabit over inciting communities against each following border disputes between the two counties.
Speaking in Wajir, the Governor said he saw Marsabit leaders threatening and inciting communities against each other, noting people have been good neighbours who need each other every day.
The boundaries between Wajir, Marsabit and its neighbouring counties have never changed since Kenya 1963.
There has been tension in Basir which has recently been disputed by Marsabit leaders, they accused the Eldas member of parliament of initiating development projects in the area that they claimed is in Marsabit County.
“Basir did not sprout yesterday, it was created in 1988 as an allocation in the then Wajir West and people have settled there and lived and voted there since 1992,” he said.
The Governor who is also the chair for council of Governors noted that there was a bit of internal disputes between Wajir North and Eldas wondering why people of Marsabit have issues on the same.
He appeared to attribute to the current border disputes over the decision of setting up a multi-agency team at the border to prevent narcotic smuggling that he noted have continued to destroy lives.
The routes he noted have been a conduit of transporting drugs, weapons and human trafficking adding that the authority cannot seek anyone’s advice to set up a roadblock.

“If people have boundary dispute and they have facts that differ from the ones we have they can take to relevant government offices but let them not incite people against each other, we need each other today and tomorrow” the governor said while in Wajir
The Governor insisted that the areas mentioned by Marsabit leaders are not owned by Eldas Member of Parliament but are part and parcel of Wajir County adding that if anyone has laying claim he should move to relevant offices for redress.
Speaking in Moyale last week, Marsabit Governor Mohamud Ali claimed Eldas Mp has initiated development projects and has an extension agenda towards Marsabit.
The Governor claimed security teams from both counties said they will sit down and find a solution to the disputes but alleged that the lawmaker curtailed the meeting.
“The minister of Interior has pronounced himself that that construction must stop, unfortunately the construction has not stopped and that could be a recipe of chaos and bloodshed which we don’t want,” said the governor.
