USA July 3, 2026 - Spain Cruise Past Austria to Reach World Cup Last 16 as Oyarzabal Stars
Spain delivered one of their most complete performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, brushing aside Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 to book their place in the last 16. A clinical brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and a second-half header from Pedro Porro ensured Luis de la Fuente's side continued their impressive tournament, extending their unbeaten run while maintaining a perfect defensive record.
The European champions entered the knockout clash as favourites after topping their group without conceding a goal, but Austria arrived full of confidence following their dramatic qualification from Group J, sealed by a stoppage-time equaliser against Algeria. However, Ralf Rangnick's side found themselves overwhelmed by a Spanish team that dominated possession, dictated the tempo and rarely allowed their opponents a foothold in the game.
Spain wasted little time asserting control in front of a packed crowd at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Lamine Yamal, making only his second start since recovering from a hamstring injury, was at the heart of many of Spain's early attacks, while Pedri and Rodri orchestrated play from midfield with their usual composure. Marc Cucurella even thought he had given Spain an early lead, but his effort was ruled out after the referee judged that he had fouled Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager during the build-up.
The disallowed goal did little to disrupt Spain's rhythm.
Their breakthrough finally arrived in the 36th minute. Pedri switched play brilliantly to Cucurella, whose inviting cross found Mikel Oyarzabal inside the penalty area. The Real Sociedad forward made no mistake, calmly side-footing the ball past Schlager to give Spain a deserved 1-0 advantage. It was Oyarzabal's first goal of the knockout stage and reward for Spain's relentless attacking pressure.
Austria attempted to respond after the interval, with Rangnick making several attacking substitutions, including introducing veteran striker Marko Arnautović and hero of the Algeria match Saša Kalajdžić. But Spain's defence, marshalled superbly by Aymeric Laporte and Pau Cubarsí, remained untroubled throughout the contest.
In fact, Austria failed to register a single shot on target, a testament to Spain's defensive dominance. It marked the first time since the 2014 World Cup that a team had kept their opponents without a shot on target in a knockout-stage match.
Spain doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through an unlikely scorer.

Álex Baena whipped in an excellent cross from the left, and right-back Pedro Porro timed his run perfectly before powering a header beyond Schlager. The goal, Porro's first in a Spain shirt, effectively ended Austria's hopes of mounting a comeback and reflected the fluidity and confidence with which La Roja attacked throughout the afternoon.
With the result seemingly beyond doubt, Spain continued to press forward in search of a third goal.
Their persistence was rewarded in the 89th minute when Cucurella claimed his second assist of the match. The left-back picked out Oyarzabal inside the area, and the striker produced another composed finish to complete his brace and put the icing on an outstanding team performance. The late goal also underlined Oyarzabal's growing importance in Spain's attack as they prepare for the latter stages of the tournament.
Beyond the scoreline, Spain's overall display sent another warning to the rest of the competition.
Luis de la Fuente's side have now played four matches at the tournament without conceding a single goal. Their defensive solidity has been matched by increasing sharpness in attack, with Yamal, Pedri, Dani Olmo and Oyarzabal combining to devastating effect. Spain also struck the woodwork and had another effort ruled out, meaning the margin of victory could easily have been even greater.
The defeat marked the end of a memorable World Cup campaign for Austria. After reaching the knockout rounds for the first time in more than four decades, Rangnick's men simply came up against a Spanish side operating at an exceptionally high level. Despite the disappointment, Austria leave the tournament with renewed optimism after proving they can compete on football's biggest stage.
Spain, meanwhile, march confidently into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the Portugal versus Croatia tie. With four clean sheets, an unbeaten record and a squad brimming with confidence, the 2010 world champions are increasingly looking like one of the strongest contenders to lift the trophy once again
