Somalia, 14 April 2026 Somaliland has proposed forming a peace committee with North East State to resolve tensions in Sool region but has received no response, President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi ‘Irro’ said.
Speaking during his constitutional address to both houses of parliament on Tuesday, Irro said the government had submitted proposals including the establishment of a peace committee, the exchange of prisoners, and the reopening of trade and movement of people.
“Somaliland is ready for peace, including the exchange of prisoners and the reopening of trade and movement of people,” Irro said, adding that no response has yet been received from North East State administration in Las Anod.
The president also highlighted the social and cultural ties between the people of Sool and the rest of Somaliland, calling for a collective effort to reach a lasting solution.

“People of Sool are an integral part of Somaliland. They share blood and culture,” he said, adding that any grievances can be resolved through dialogue.
Irro also expressed appreciation to traditional elders, particularly a delegation led by Garaad Kulmiye, which he said had undertaken multiple peace missions to Las Anod and Buuhoodle.
The remarks come amid ongoing tensions in parts of the Sool region, where political and security dynamics remain complex.
Somaliland authorities say they remain committed to peaceful engagement while awaiting a response to their proposals.
