Somalia, 5 August 2026 – Opposition group Somali Future Council on Tuesday accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of fuelling tensions in the central city of Galkayo, alleging that the government had deployed arms and troops there.
In a statement, the council said the alleged deployment had heightened tensions and threatened peace and stability in areas shared by the Galmudug and Puntland regional administrations.
The opposition group also said fighting had broken out in Galkayo as a result of the alleged deployment, although Dawan could not independently verify that any such fighting had occurred.

The council accused the government of diverting attention from military operations against Islamist militant group Al Shabaab by creating tensions in areas that had remained relatively stable.
The council said Galkayo had spent the past decade recovering from conflict and warned against actions that it said could undermine those gains.
The Somali Future Council called on regional administrations, traditional elders, religious leaders, intellectuals and civil society groups to work together to preserve peace and prevent further escalation in Galkayo.
