Somalia, Aug. 4 2026— Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Somalia’s coastline extends beyond 3,800 kilometres, longer than the figure cited in educational materials and public references.
The President made the remarks while opening Somalia’s First National Ocean Conference, organized by the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport.
Hassan Sheikh said Somalia’s coastline has long been estimated at 3,333 kilometres, but that newer information indicates the actual length is significantly greater.
“It was previously said that Somalia’s coastline was 3,333 kilometres, as most recently published and standardized, our coastline is more than 3,800 kilometres,” President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said.

Officials say the conference is expected to produce documents and practical recommendations that can guide the government and the Somali people in future plans to develop the blue economy and sustainably benefit from the country’s marine resources.
