Mogadishu, 13 October 2025 — Somalia’s House of the People has elected Omar Ali Isaq as a new member of the Constitutional Review Committee, tasked with reviewing the Provisional Constitution.
Isaq emerged the winner, receiving 92 votes against his only challenger, Lull Ibrahim, who garnered 68 votes. A total of 160 lawmakers participated in the election held in Parliament today, overseen by House Speaker Aden Mohamed Nur (Madobe).
The seat became vacant following Yusuf Mohamed Walid’s appointment as Deputy Minister for Fisheries.
Commenting on the election, Lull, who conceded defeat, described the contest as competitive, likening it to a presidential race.
“The competition for this seat was very tough, akin to electing a president. I am proud to have contested against my colleague as a female candidate,” she said.
Welcoming his victory, Isaq said he had campaigned hard for nearly a year to secure the seat.
“The seat became vacant when my colleague became a minister. I worked hard over the past year to win it, and I am pleased to have secured this position today.”
The constitutional review committee consists of 10 members, with five representatives from the House of the People and five from the Upper House, and is charged with completing and finalizing the constitution, which has already seen several chapters ratified.
The Provisional Constitution, adopted in 2012, is being reviewed to emerge as a better reflection of Somali identity and aspirations. Adoption of a permanent constitution will be key to stabilizing the federal state.
