Somalia, 2 February 2026 – The Chairman of the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, Abdikarim Ahmed Hassan, has announced that swearing-in of the recently elected Banadir council members will take place soon in Mogadishu.
The Chairman made the remarks during a political parties meeting held in the capital today.
Hassan stated that the swearing-in will enable the council members to elect their leaders and serve Mogadishu residents as stipulated in the constitution.
"Our duty is to ensure that when these members take the oath, they can start electing the leaders of the councils," he said, adding that the commission’s responsibility ends once the members are sworn in.

He also noted that preparations for regional council elections in the federal member states are already underway, pledging that the commission will work hard to deliver free elections.
The Chairman said a recent meeting with the President of Hirshabelle State, Ali Gudlaawe, it was agreed that political parties could begin their campaigns in Hirshabelle territories. Hassan also announced that he would soon meet with the President of South West State, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, to discuss the possibility for starting election campaigns in that region.
He mentioned that the commission will continue to oversee the election process in other regions of the country, ensuring that the exercise remains transparent and efficient.
