MOGADISHU (Dawan Africa) 2 May 2026 — Somalia plans to launch a “Decent Work” programme to protect workers’ rights and improve labour conditions, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs said.
The initiative was announced during International Workers’ Day events held in Mogadishu on Saturday, where officials outlined efforts to align employment conditions with labour standards and ensure fair compensation.
Zakariye Abdi, director of labour at the ministry, said the programme is designed to ensure workers receive their full entitlements.
“The ministry is introducing a programme called ‘Decent Work’ to ensure employees receive what they are entitled to, whether in terms of wages or other rights,” he said.

Officials said the programme will focus on improving labour standards, addressing wage concerns and strengthening protections for workers.
Worker representatives highlighted ongoing challenges, including low pay, lack of leave entitlements and high unemployment.
“Somali workers face very difficult conditions, including low wages and limited access to their rights,” said Mahmoud Osman Ali, head of a labour union.
Youth unemployment in Somalia is estimated at around 60%, according to local estimates, with limited job opportunities cited as a major challenge.
The government said the programme forms part of broader efforts to improve labour conditions and support employment across the country.
