MOGADISHU, 2 August 2026 — Somalia has launched a new strategy to modernize trade, reduce barriers and strengthen regional economic integration, Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama said on Sunday.
Jama inaugurated a meeting of the National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC) in Mogadishu, attended by senior government officials, representatives of the East African Community (EAC) and regional trade stakeholders.
The discussions focused on simplifying trade procedures, harmonizing regulations and improving the efficiency of cross-border commerce as Somalia seeks to boost competitiveness and expand economic opportunities.
Minister of Commerce and Industry Jama Mohamed Hassan said the meeting offers Somalia a chance to learn from EAC experience in advancing trade reforms and strengthening institutional capacity.

"Trade facilitation is a key pillar of Somalia's National Transformation Plan," Jama told participants. "Efficient trade systems are critical to driving economic growth, attracting investment and creating a more competitive business environment."
He called for aligning trade regulations, strengthening quality standards and improving supporting infrastructure to reduce delays and lower the cost of doing business.
Participants noted that intra-African trade remains below its potential and urged stronger commercial links between Somalia and neighbouring countries through closer regional cooperation.
Officials said the meeting is expected to accelerate implementation of Somalia's trade facilitation agenda and foster a more predictable business climate for local entrepreneurs and international investors.
