Somalia, 10 August 2026 – Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, a candidate for speaker of Somalia's House of the People, pledged on Monday to serve all lawmakers equally and safeguard parliament’s dignity, independence and integrity if elected.
"I pledge to be a speaker who serves all lawmakers equally and works to protect the dignity, independence and integrity of the House," Nur told lawmakers ahead of the speaker's election.
Nur, who is also known as Jamaa, said his platform was built around five priorities that would guide his leadership of the lower house.
They include strengthening parliamentary oversight of the executive, accelerating the passage of priority legislation, improving lawmakers' professional and institutional capacity, strengthening international parliamentary cooperation and improving services and welfare for members of parliament.

Nur and Abdulkadir Omar Moallim, known as Daada, are the two remaining candidates in the contest for speaker of the House of the People, with lawmakers due to choose between them on Monday.
The two candidates received their certificates from the election committee on Saturday after meeting the requirements set for the contest.
The speaker's election comes amid political tensions between Somalia's federal government and opposition groups over constitutional issues, presidential and parliamentary terms and the country's electoral system.
The winner will lead the lower house of Somalia's federal parliament at a time of heightened political debate over the country's constitutional and electoral arrangements.
