Mombasa (Dawan Africa) – Somalia signed an agreement to improve maritime security, combat illegal fishing and protect maritime resources.
The agreement was signed at the ongoing conference on global oceans taking place in Mombasa. Deputy Prime Minister; Salah Ahmed Jama, is among senior officials attending the meeting.
Somalia was one of 15 countries to sign the Mombasa Declaration at the 11th Our Ocean Conference (OOC11), bringing together representatives of various nations and international organizations.
The declaration focuses on strengthening fisheries transparency, sharing vessel data and combating illegal fishing that harms both the economy and the marine environment.

The signatory countries agreed to promote accountability and sustainable management of marine resources to combat illegal fishing, estimated to cost the world billions of dollars every year.
Jama stressed the importance of international cooperation in protecting oceans and developing the blue economy.
He highlighted Somalia’s commitments, including strengthening maritime security, fighting illegal fishing, protecting coastal environments and attracting international investment to develop the country’s blue economy.
The conference, being held in Africa for the first time, runs from June 16 to 18 and focuses on ocean protection, sustainable fisheries, maritime security and boosting economies that depend on marine resources.
