Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Somalia will introduce an electronic visa system (E-VISA/ETAS) from 1 September 2025, according to the Immigration and Citizenship Agency on Thursday. The system will allow foreign travelers to apply for visas online through www.evisa.gov.so.
Officials say the platform aims to cut paperwork, reduce processing times, and improve monitoring of people entering the country. The Agency noted that the new approach brings Somalia in line with other countries that use electronic visa systems.
The Agency’s Director General, Mustafa Duhulow, described the rollout as an important step toward modernizing immigration services. He said the E-VISA will also strengthen security and ensure visa fees are collected more transparently.
“This program contributes directly to the country’s security, allowing us to know a person’s information before they enter Somalia,” Duhulow stated.
Isaq Hassan Takow, Director of the Foreigners and Entry Department, said staff have been trained to handle applications under the new system.
The Agency clarified that exemptions will apply for diplomats, residents, holders of multiple-entry visas, UNLP travel documents, and nationals from countries with visa-free agreements with Somalia.
In its statement, the Agency emphasized that the E-VISA system is expected to strengthen Somalia’s security framework, increase government revenues, and facilitate international mobility. However, observers note that the system’s success will depend on its implementation and the government’s ability to ensure transparency and security in digital processing.
