MOGADISHU (Dawan), 21 SEP – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Monday called for greater social change through education as 172 students graduated from SIMAD University’s postgraduate programmes in Mogadishu.
Addressing the graduation ceremony, Prime Minister Hamza emphasized that education should not end with obtaining an academic qualification but should be reflected in people’s conduct, responsibility and service to society.
The Prime Minister said Somalia needs social change led by educated citizens, highlighting the role of knowledge and awareness in transforming society.
“An educated society should demonstrate the knowledge it has acquired,” he said, emphasizing the importance of turning academic achievement into meaningful social impact.

“A tribalist general and a tribalist Sheikh—where do we go from there? Change is needed,” Prime Minister Hamza said.
He also urged universities across the country to produce a generation whose knowledge and education are visibly reflected in their contribution to society.
“If what you have studied cannot be seen in you, then there is something wrong that needs to be corrected. Education should be reflected in society; you carry with you the values of religion and patriotism.”
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when the number of students graduating from universities across Somalia continues to increase.
The graduation highlights a broader challenge for higher education in Somalia: ensuring that academic achievements translate into professional skills, responsible leadership and tangible contributions to society.
