Somalia, 14 June 2026 – Somalia’s Education Minister Farah Abdulkadir Mohamed opened the country's second national AI summit in Mogadishu on Sunday to discuss using artificial intelligence for healthcare, education and economic growth.
The two-day AI Summit Somalia 2026 was convened by the National Communications Authority in collaboration with the AI Somalia Community, Zamzam University of Science and Technology and Somali National University.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mohamed urged both public and private institutions to use the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence to strengthen education, research, innovation and the knowledge-based economy.
The NCA said the summit will examine AI governance and regulation, the use of AI in public services, education, healthcare, agriculture, cybersecurity, data protection, digital rights, Somali-language AI, innovation and the digital economy.
Senior officials from the federal government, university representatives, researchers, entrepreneurs, civil society groups and students attended the opening.

Ahmed Osman, founder of Somali AI, said artificial intelligence could create opportunities for Somali youth in education, business and also provide viable solutions to social and economic challenges if used properly.
“Somali youth can benefit from artificial intelligence in every part of their lives,” he said.
The summit aims to provide a platform for government institutions, academia, innovators, the private sector and development partners to promote practical AI-driven solutions for Somalia’s development priorities.
The event is supported by the World Bank Group through the SCALE-UP Project.
The summit follows the first national AI gathering held in 2024 and reflects Somalia’s growing interest in using emerging technologies to support innovation, public services and economic growth.
