Somalia, 15 October 2025 — The Somali parliament has today elected nine members to represent the country in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The MPs were elected during a joint sitting of both houses ( the House of the People and the Upper House), in Mogadishu. The elections were presided over by the Speaker of the House of the People, Aden Mohamed Noor (Madobe), with 222 MPs casting their votes. Each seat was contested by two candidates, and the winners were determined by majority vote.
The elected MPs are:
- Abukar Abdi Osman
- Hussein Hassan Abdi
- Sahra Ali Hassan
- Ilhan Ali Gassar
- Fadumo Abdullahi Mohamud
- Abdisalam Hadliye Omar
- Faisal Abdi Roble
- Abdirahman Bashir Sharif
- Fahmo Ahmed Noor
The MPs will serve a five-year term, which is renewable. With these elections, the total number of EALA members now stands at 72.
Somalia formally joined the East African Community (EAC) in 2023, reinforcing the country’s political and economic integration in the region.
Speaker Aden Madoobe congratulated the elected MPs, noting that this election fulfills one of Somalia’s key requirements for EAC membership.
