Somalia, 24 December 2025 The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has officially released the list of candidates vying for elective posts in tomorrow's Banadir local council elections.
The elections will determine the local councils or assemblies for the districts in the Banadir region, which have been divided into two categories: A, which will have 27 members, and B, with only 21 members across 16 districts of the region.
A total of 20 political parties participating in the elections have submitted 1,604 candidates, who will compete in Mogadishu's 16 districts.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) has submitted the highest number of candidates (390) meaning the ruling party has a candidate in all the 390 elective seats.

According to the list, 77 per cent of the candidates submitted by the political parties are male, while the remaining 23 per cent are female. The report shows that the majority of the candidates are young, with 69 per cent of them under the age of 36.
The analysis of these statistics indicates that the majority of participants in the election will be youth, although the commission has not yet released the number of registered voters who have collected their voter cards.
The electoral commission is currently working on preparing the designated polling stations for the election, despite opposition from some groups.
