Kenya, 24 December 2025 - At least seven people were killed on the spot and several others seriously injured in a horrific road accident along the Webuye–Eldoret Road in Kakamega County late on Tuesday night.
The crash occurred in the Munalo area, when a matatu (public service vehicle) carrying passengers collided with a stationary trailer on the busy highway.
The impact was so severe that multiple passengers died instantly, while others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Webuye Level Four Hospital for treatment.
Early reports indicate that the matatu, a Nissan model packed with passengers, rammed into the rear of a parked trailer.
The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation by traffic police, but such crashes are often linked to speeding, poor visibility at night, and driver fatigue, all common risk factors on Kenyan highways.
The stretch of the Webuye–Eldoret Road is part of a network of major highways connecting western Kenya to the Rift Valley. It has a history of fatal accidents, with past incidents along the same corridor involving matatus and heavy trucks resulting in multiple deaths.
This tragedy is the latest in a series of deadly highway accidents in Kenya, where matatus frequently collide with trailers and lorries.

A similar crash along this highway in January 2022 claimed eight lives when a matatu hit a parked truck in the Musembe area.
Across the country, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) continues to highlight major routes prone to fatalities due to factors like speeding, inadequate signage, driver fatigue, and poor vehicle maintenance.
Emergency responders and police are at the scene managing traffic and investigating the crash. The injured are being stabilised at Webuye Level Four Hospital, where their conditions remain critical.
Police have appealed to motorists to exercise caution, especially during festive travel periods, when road traffic increases significantly.
Authorities are expected to release more details as investigations proceed.
