Mogadishu, 19 September 2026 – The Somalia Development and Reconstruction Bank (SDRB) has made its first investment as the government moves to strengthen long-term financing for economic growth and private sector development.
The announcement was made during the Somalia Development Finance Forum in Mogadishu, held under the theme “Financing Somalia’s Next Chapter: From Recovery to Sustainable Development.”
The forum brought together senior government officials, financial sector leaders, private sector representatives and development partners to discuss investment opportunities to support Somalia’s economic development.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said the move represents progress in rebuilding national institutions and strengthening the country’s economy.
He said the government is committed to developing long-term investment approaches that create sustainable markets, strengthen the private sector and direct financing toward productive sectors.

Discussions focused on mobilizing financing for key sectors, including agriculture, livestock, fisheries and renewable energy, as well as the role of SDRB in addressing financing needs for businesses and development projects.
SDRB Chairperson Hodan Osman said Somalia has many entrepreneurs and opportunities but requires structured long-term financing to help successful businesses grow into larger companies and industries.
"SDRB’s role is to close that gap by working with the government, development partners and commercial banks to prepare investments, share risks and expand long-term financing for Somalia’s productive sectors," Osman said.
The bank was established under Law No. 25 of 24 June 2014 to support economic reconstruction, private sector growth and investment in priority productive sectors. It is implementing its 2025–2030 Strategic Plan, which focuses on strengthening governance, attracting capital and expanding development financing programs.
The forum also highlighted the importance of using public investment strategically to attract additional private sector investment and support Somalia’s development plans.
