Somalia, June9 2026 – Somalia’s Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has distributed food aid to drought-affected families in Afgooye district, Lower Shabelle, and Harardheere district, Mudug, the agency said on Wednesday.
The aid distribution is part of SoDMA’s humanitarian response programme aimed at supporting communities facing food insecurity and the impact of prolonged drought conditions.
“This assistance is part of our continued efforts to reach communities affected by drought and humanitarian challenges. We will continue working to ensure that vulnerable families receive the support they need,” SoDMA Commissioner Mahmoud Moallim Abdulle told Dawan.
In Afgooye, SoDMA said the first phase of food assistance targeted 2,500 households affected by drought, with an initial 264 families receiving support. The remaining households are expected to receive assistance in subsequent phases.

In Harardheere, authorities said 2,650 families were selected to receive food packages containing essential supplies, including flour, rice, cooking oil and sugar.
Local officials and community representatives welcomed the assistance, saying many families had experienced severe hardship due to drought, loss of livestock, declining agricultural production and limited access to livelihoods.
Residents in Harardheere said the area had faced years of isolation due to insecurity, which limited access to humanitarian assistance. Officials said SoDMA’s arrival marked an important step in expanding support to communities affected by both drought and conflict.
SoDMA said it would continue humanitarian efforts to support vulnerable communities affected by drought and other emergencies across Somalia.
