Somalia, 16 June 2026 – Somalia called on international and regional organisations on Tuesday to condemn Israel’s engagement with Somaliland, saying the contacts violated its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
In a statement, Somalia’s Foreign Ministry said the federal government was the only legitimate authority authorised to represent the country in international relations.
The ministry said any political, diplomatic or other engagement with Somaliland that bypassed the federal government was inconsistent with international law and carried no legal or political standing.
Somalia urged the United Nations, African Union, Arab League, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Intergovernmental Authority on Development and other international partners to uphold international law and support Somalia’s territorial integrity.

It also called on the organisations to condemn actions that it said could undermine Somalia’s unity and stability.
The ministry said Somalia reserved the right to take all lawful and necessary measures through diplomatic, legal and other appropriate channels to protect its sovereignty and national unity.
It said Somalia remained committed to peaceful dialogue, regional stability and constructive engagement with international partners, but would not accept actions it regarded as violations of its sovereignty.
The statement followed Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro’s official visit to Israel and Somaliland’s announcement that it had opened an embassy in Jerusalem.
